Hello and welcome! Here at Red Deer Speech Therapy, we believe in the power of communication for everyone. Sometimes, the traditional methods of verbal speech might not work for all individuals. That’s where AAC comes in – offering alternative pathways to express thoughts, wants, needs, and dreams. And yes, we’re LAMP certified!
So, what’s AAC? AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It includes all the ways we share our thoughts and feelings without talking. This can range from simple gestures or signs, to sophisticated electronic devices. And LAMP? That stands for Language Acquisition through Motor Planning. It’s a therapeutic approach based on neurological and motor learning principles, often used with electronic speech-generating devices.
Being LAMP certified means our SLPs are equipped with knowledge and expertise in one of the most effective AAC methodologies. We use this to help our clients find their unique voice, even when verbal speech might be challenging.
Our AAC therapy sessions are tailored to meet individual needs. We start by understanding the person – their likes, dislikes, routines, and communication goals. This allows us to personalize the AAC system that suits them best.
Whether we’re introducing a manual communication board, a speech-generating device, or implementing the principles of LAMP, we make sure the journey is engaging and empowering. We’re big believers in making therapy fun and interactive, because that’s when the best learning happens!
But our work doesn’t stop at introducing the AAC system. We guide individuals and their caregivers on how to use it effectively in their daily lives. This might involve learning how to use specific symbols or words, or strategies to stimulate communication throughout the day.
Our AAC program at Red Deer Speech Therapy isn’t just about finding alternative ways to communicate. It’s about breaking barriers, promoting independence, and giving individuals the confidence to express themselves. Because we believe everyone has something to say, and every voice deserves to be heard.
Whether you’re new to AAC or looking to refine your skills, we’re here for you. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or if you’re ready to begin your AAC journey. We’re excited to be a part of it!
